CLAUDIO: Genuinely Panintent or Shallow and Insincere?

In act 5 of Much Ado About Nothing, Claudio shows his anger towards the situation with Hero and this guy that was supposedly "at her window" at night. He expresses that he is sad and angry through his little performance that he put on at the wedding. It also showed how immature he is. I don't think that Claudio deserved another chance with Hero because he never really proved how much he loved her. When he found out that Hero was dead, he didn't seem likie he really cared. He showed no emotion, he didn't seem sad at all. All he cared about was that some other man took her virginity. When Leanarto came to challenge Claudio he took it as a joke and laughed at him and said he was too old for him to fight. That doesn't show much respect for a man who's daughter that u caused to die. Claudio was was clowning around with Don Pedro as if nothing had happened. If Claudio was really hurt by Hero's death he would have cried and mourned even if she did do what she was accused of, just like he did when he found out she was innocent. If you truley love someone you would show it no matter what the situation is, weather they did right or wrong.

Mmm...well, actually the wedding scene is in act 4, but his behavior toward Leonato is callous in act 5.

I buy the argument--he only loved her when she was virtous? Pah.

its true claudio was only interested in seizing her virginity. It always seems like that was a prize, in the end he probably didn't love her. He just coveted that precious gem between her legs.

the reason why virginity and staying abstinent was so important in those days was firstly because of how religious everyone was but also because germ theory wasn't discovered yet so it made more sense to them that it was a curse from god when they contracted an illness after having sex with someone who was unfaithful since they couldn't possibly understand that it was really a virus that caused their illness. so back then, before condoms and any understanding of what caused diseases it made sense to want a virgin for a wife.

i agree with you, claudio didnt really show any interest in hero because of the way he acted with her..it seemed like he just wanted her virginity

i agree that claudio did not deserve hero after the way he acted when he heard she was dead, and the way he treated her father. however at teh end of the story i was still happy that hero and claudio ended up together. i guess it's because at the end he realized what he lost when he found out that she was innocent and also well she wont be sent to a convent.

i believe Claudio truly did love Hero. He wanted more than her virginity. when he love at her you see in his eyes that he had lust and love at the same time. His feelings towards her was from the heart.
